The Dodo

Once the king of all creatures feathered, the Dodo ruled with might and respect from the ground. The island of Mauritius was his kingdom until driven into extinction by Dutch immigrants. Could he be protecting the last remaining egg to carry on the powerful family line?

Thanks! Pastels seem a lot more vibrant than some other mediums. Also very fun to work with.

Thanks! I see you are a lover of the natural world as well. Check out this link, seriously! Walton Ford is one of my heroes. You'll dig it too.

Frankly you can pass this off as an oil painting. The fantasy element is so uber dominating.

Seriously had you been in Tenniel's era, you could have given him a run for his money.

Yeah, I try to use pastels in a way to make them a little more substantial than they are normally used. Thanks.

Pastels have always mystified me. Your powers for manipulating them are admirable and I envy you your talent. Beautiful piece btw. Poor Dodo...they never had a chance.

thanks. Pastels are actually very forgiving. Much less intimidating than oils. Just takes a bit to get the hang of them.

I think I'll have to start taking art class again. D: -ENVY-

Nice work. I was reading your other comments, using gray shades to tie it all together? I would have never thought of that. Nice job, dude.

And the Dodo ruled with an awesome fist. ...Er, claw. ...Wing. Beak.

Congratulations on your DD while I'm at it. I think I'd have to watch you now.

thanks. once the sketch is done, I kind of just bullshit it as I go along except for a loose color guideline. Keeps it more spontaneous and fun.

actually I'm a graphic designer/art director. I just do this for myself at night. I tried freelancing a while back, but seemed to be a pain in the ass getting going. I needed a paycheck instead.

The color of the tones look so nice in this. It really is sad Dodo's are not around anymore. Respect to the king dodo, the last of his kind :salute:

WOW! You really capture color schemes so well. Very rich. I'm lovin' the surreal quality of having the crown on his head. It makes me think of an Alice and Wonderland.

This is a really classy piece. I love the way you use the pastels. Sort of soft yet solid if that makes any sense. I've tried soft pastels myself and really like them but not in this league. :fav:

thanks. I use pastel to get that softness and intensity, but keep some hard lines and contrast. In the past, I always thought pastels were for old ladies. Trying to turn that perception upside down. It's actually very versatile.
